In reply to the Honourable the Colonial Secretary's letter No. 2253/10 Conf. dated 21st April, we the under- signed Officers of the Permanent Staff of the Public Works Department beg to thank Your Excellency for your prompt attention to our letter of the 13th instant, and note with regret that Your Fxcellancy's decision remains unchanged, and we therefore respectfully request Your Excellency to forward to the Secretary of State for the Colonies this covering letter, together with the attached copies of our original letter to Your Excellency, and Your Excellancy's reply to the game.

We are convinced that the Director of Public Works will be only too ploused to testify to the work which has been done in the past and is now being done by the staff, and we respectfully requoat Your Tycollenoy to take into consideration that this appointment will affect not only the officers, who may expect to immediately benefit by Mr. Jones' promotion, but the whole of a hard working and ca-

pable staff.
